Abstract
The topicality of researching the issue of dynamics of the lexical and semantic norm on the boundary of the 19th and early 20th c. is stipulated, first of all, by the very source of the study – the letters of the prominent physicist, translator and politician I. Puliui that have never been an object of linguistic analysis so far; secondly, the linguistic practice of I. Puliui is an illustrative lingual focus of the linguistic and political development of Halychyna in the period under analysis; thirdly, there emerged an urgent need to interpret the linguistic norm as a synthetic diachronic and synchronic phenomenon, stipulated by the social and political situation; fourthly, the researched period is the time for stabilization of the lexical and semantic norm as an integrating factor of the Western and Eastern Ukraine; fifthly, there emerged a need to revise the status of the Old Ukrainian and Common Slavonic vocabulary in the today’s norm of the language culture.
Our objective is to analyze the language of over 300 letters of I. Puliui in order to find out the Russian and Polish interferemes, polonisms and dialecticisms in the context of the modern lexical and semantic norm. Our task is to conduct the diachronic and synchronic analysis of dynamics of the lexical and semantic norm on the basis of the important lexicographical sources (Malorus-German Dictionary, compiled by Ye. Zhelekhivskyi, and the Dictionary, compiled by B. Hrinchenko) and in the context of change of the social and political situation.
The basis of the research is the search in the compared lexicographical sources for the Russian and sometimes Polish interferemes (russianisms, polonisms) that, as the performed analysis proves, were considered to be genuine lexical units in the linguistic conscience of those times. For the study of the lexical and semantic, as well as etymological analysis – there are three lexical groups singled out: vocabulary of the Church Slavonic origin with Proto-Slavonic basis; Old Ukrainian vocabulary; borrowed and dialect vocabulary that confirms the genuine character of the thinker’s language, for which, with account of the diachronic norm, there are no reasons to consider it macaronic.
The comparative lexicographical synchronic and diachronic analysis of the problematic vocabulary of the letters of I. Puliui proved the absolute natural and organic character of the language of the thinker of the late 19th – early 20th century. Among 84 Russian interferemes, with account of the current norm, in the Dictionary by B. Hrinchenko we have found 43 similar lexical and semantic units what confirms their genuine perception by the linguistic conscience of speakers of that time. There were only 18 units of the borrowed russianisms and 10 units of polonisms found, but they definitely do not make the thinker’s individual style macaronic, they barely confirm their sporadic nature on the background of Ukrainian people linguistic matrix.
The conducted historical lexical and semantic analysis in the context of inter-linguistic homonymy and interference encourages to actualization of the vocabulary of the Church Slavonic origin and Ukrainian historic vocabulary, reflected in our historical lexicographical sources. The obtained results correlate with the historical and sociolinguistic researches of the lexical and semantic norm in the works of L. Hnatuik, L. Tkach, M. Lesiuk and others, and expand the practical and source base. Further on, we plan to carry out the multisided exploration of the linguistic portrait of I. Puliui.
