Abstract
Introduction. The modern stage of development of linguistics is characterized by an attempt to systematize semantic-syntactic units on new conceptual or methodological principles, to revise and clarify certain scientific concepts formulated for several decades.
The purpose of the research is to study paremy units of the English language discourse and to determine the content aspect of English proverbs and sayings and the features of their structural formation.
Methods of structural-semantic, component and functional analysis, as well as methods of analysis of vocabulary definitions and parts of speech characteristics for the implementation of the typology of English paremic units are used.
Results. Analysis of variants of the same proverbs in the dictionary demonstrated that changes in the vocabulary of grammatical proverbs may include: 1) the use of synonyms, for example: It is anill bird that fouls its own nest – It is a foul bird that defiles its own nest,
2) replacing archaisms with more commonly used lexical units: Burnt bairns dread the fire
– A burnt child dreads the fire, 3) variability of modal verbs : Accidents will happen i n the best regulated families – Accidents can occur in the best regulated families.
It should be noted that changes in the lexico-grammar content of the proverbs are limited to the relative stability of its figurative structure and usage of lexical units.
Conclusion. Taking into account the number of representation of proverbs and sayings in the language of translation, these units are traditionally divided into equivalent and nonequivalent ones. The ways of transferring equivalent paremias are their translation using the full equivalent, partial (lexical or grammatical) equivalent, paremian analogues. Calque, descriptive, as well as a combined translation are referred to the equivalent methods of translation.
