Relevance of the topic. The basic requirements that are necessary to protect the rights of breeding achievements are the difference, homogeneity, and stability of new varieties. The International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV) has developed the general principles of expertise on these criteria. The genus of lupine in general is characterized by a wide spectrum of morphological features, biological properties and other economic characteristics. However, white lupine (Lupinus albus L.), compared with other Mediterranean species, is characterized by a relatively smaller variety of morphological features. As a result, the color of the flower becomes important for the evaluation of new varieties by the criterion of difference.
The purpose of the study is to evaluate the white lupine collection by color of the flower and select samples-standards that match certain varieties.
Results. In lupine the white color of the flower is recognized as the main feature on which the classification is carried out according to the varieties. Inflorescences in lupine - apical raceme with the alternate placement of flowers of a butterfly type. Flowers are large, odorless, the color of inflorescences is mostly white, bluish, sometimes light pink, depending on the intensity of the anthocyanin pigment. Corolla of the flower pot consists of five petals: a banner, two wings and a keel. The color of the wings is most clearly expressed, therefore, when studying the collection of white lupine and the identification of samples by variety, as well as for the determination of reference samples, the focus was on the color of the wings. In the results of the assessment of the collection by color of flowers, all samples are divided into eight groups with different manifestations of this feature, each of which is represented by standard samples.
In the variety of Albiflorus Atab. the color of the corolla of the flower is pure white, the tip of the keel is light cream, the calyx is light yellow, the axis of inflorescence is light green. Coloring of vegetative organs is light green. The standard for this variety is defined collectible samples of Ukrainian origin by the numbers of the national catalog UD0800636 (Rhapsody variety), UD0801225 (line 7793) and UD0801224 (line 7760).
Variety Vavilori Atab. has a white color of the corolla of the flower, the tip of the keel is dark (gray), the calyx is yellow-green, the axis of inflorescence is light yellow. The coloration of vegetative organs is green. The distinguished reference sample, which most closely matches this variety, is the number of the national catalog UD0800692 (variety Hadmers blebener N.) originated from Germany.
Variety of Subroseus Libk. is differs by the light pink color of the corolla of the flower, dark blue the tip of the keel, the calyx and the inflorescence light green. The coloration of the vegetative organs is green. The standard for this variety is a collection samples of the national catalog number UD0800440 (variety Heine 703, country of origin Germany) and UD0800554 (country of origin Ethiopia).
In the variety of Vulgaris Libk. the color of the corolla of the flower is light blue, the tip of the keel is dark blue, the calyx and the inflorescence light green. Coloring of vegetative organs is light green. Samples-standard are samples of the collection by the numbers of the national catalog UD0801466 (variety Serpnevyi) and UD0801706 (Makarivskyi variety) of Ukrainian origin.
Variety Abissinicus Libk. - the color of the corolla of the flower is blue, the tip of the keel is dark blue, the calyx and the axis of inflorescence are greenish-lilac. The coloration of vegetative organs is dark green, beans and seeds are less large. This variation in the collection is represented by standard samples with numbers of the national catalog UD0801710 (Ukrainian origin), UD0800853 (Kisvardai Edes, country of origin Hungary) and UD0800808 (Portugal).
Also, collectible samples of white lupine with a different color of flowers were selected: gray-blue (sample-etalon UD0800823, country of origin Australia), light purple (sample-etalon UD0800802, country of origin Algeria) and bright pink (sample-etalon UD0800895, country origin of Bulgaria), which does not belong to the five known types of white lupine.
As a result of the conducted researches, a working collection of white lupine was created and registered at the National Center for Genetic Resources of Plants of Ukraine, based on morphological and biological characteristics, and in the first place by the color of the flower, which is represented by appropriate samples-standards.
Conclusions.
1. In the results of the evaluation of 500 collectible samples of white lupine by coloring the flowers, all samples are divided into eight groups with different manifestations of this feature.
2. Identified samples-standards, which according to the color of flowers, are most consistent with the generally accepted classification of white lupine in varieties.
3. New samples UD0800823 with gray-blue, UD0800802 with light purple and UD0800895 with a bright pink color of flowers, that do not belonging to five known types of white lupine, are selected.
