Abstract

The article presents the results of studies on the effectiveness of treatment of otitis media in dogs caused by fungi of the genus Malassezia or their associations with bacteria. Fungi of the genus Malassezia are representative of the normal microflora of all warm-blooded animals, which under certain conditions, such as a decrease in the protective mechanisms of the immune system, hereditary predisposition to the disease, can cause the progress of otitis. Methods of treating otitis media depend on the cause of the disease, since pharmacotherapy aimed at treating otitis media of bacterial origin will practically not affect otitis media of fungal origin.

Based on the results of otoscopy and cytological examination, the animals of the test groups were previously diagnosed with Malassezia otitis media of the auricle and external auditory canal, and the relation of this pathology with systemic disorders of the internal organs and the immune system was excluded.

For the treatment of Malassezia otitis of exterior auditory canal in dogs, the most effective are complex drugs containing antibacterial, fungicidal and hormonal anti-inflammatory components, since the best therapeutic effect was observed in dogs of the first and second experimental groups. In the first group the drug "Auricap" and complex drug "Pozatex" were used for sanation twice a week.In the second group, the sanation of the external auditory canal  was performed by chlorhexidine bigluconate and the Otospectrin   (KELA) daily. With the use of complex drugs, the signs of inflammation disappeared faster, the results of cytological studies improved, which is obviously due not only to the action of antibacterial and fungicidal substances, but also to the strong anti-inflammatory effects of glucocorticosteroids, which are part of the first and second group of drugs. In the dogs of the second experimental group, the healing process was slightly slower than in the animals of the first group, which may be a consequence of irritation of the epithelium of the external auditory canal with daily mechanical cleaning of inflammatory secretion-exudate.

Excessive washing and cleaning of the ear canal slows down the healing process, since  these procedures mechanically irritates the inflamed tissues of the outer ear, therefore, in the first 3-4 days it is preferable to rinse the ear canal with a warm non-irritant solution.

In order to consolidate the therapeutic effect of Malassezia otitis media in dogs, treatment should be continued for at least 7 to 10 days after clinical signs have disappeared.
