Abstract

Abstract. The article deals with the conceptual categorization problem and its reflection in the English terms to denote animal diseases. Analysis of the terms of terminology under study showed that animal diseases are structured in the subconscious by the categories of “space”, “object”, “causation”, “feature”, “quantity”, “time”. By singling out conceptual categories which participate in the process of perception of veterinary medicine and pathology objects, conceptual features of every category and bank of terminological means for categorical characteristics of scientific concepts are established.

The purpose of the article is to identify and study cases of categorization specific for the terms to denote animal diseases in the English language and to determine a set of language tools for expressing the categorical characteristics of scientific concepts.

Results. Determining categories of the terminology under study allows understanding correlation between linguistic and cognitive structures, since the form and content of the term include information concerning the mechanism of the nomination process. These psychological and cognitive processes are verbalized in the term. In the English terminology to denote animal diseases the category of time has a unique pragmatic meaning, which specifies the symptoms of disease, duration of disease, character, age specifics etc. Finding temporal shades in the meaning of the terms allowed singling out the features which characterize the category of time.

Studying the categorization helped understand the connections which exist between things verbalized in the scientific language and things hidden from observation which occurs in the depth of researcher’s subconscious.
