Abstract. The article deals with modern approaches to the procedural aspect of designing electronic dictionaries in the theory and practice of computer lexicography. In line with the purpose of the study, the characteristics of the stages of designing an electronic dictionary as a process that unfolds over time are given. Based on the analysis of scientific sources, comparison and generalization, it is established that there is no universal rigid scheme of stages of creating an electronic dictionary in modern scholarly literature because researchers have different ideas not only about the characteristics of certain stages but also about the boundaries of the process of designing electronic dictionaries. It is proposed to consider the design of an electronic dictionary as a process of creating a scientifically sound project of an electronic dictionary with programmed characteristics, properties, parameters, and functions which determine its macro- and microstructure, and that cannot be transformed into a paper analogue without reducing its functions. Three interrelated aspects are involved in the orbit of lexicographic problems: information, access, and a user. The content of information is provided by linguistics, the interaction with the user – by sociology and psychology, access – by computer science. The process of designing an electronic dictionary consists of analytical, conceptual, technological, experimental and reflective stages. Such an approach reflects the logic of design as a process, involves changing its states: the stages differ in tasks, results, subject activities, and at the same time is very conditional, because the real design process does not have a linear sequence of stages that are interdepended, interrelated and interpenetrated. Today electronic dictionaries gain the increasing popularity among a wide range of users. The development of practical value models of designing electronic dictionaries is a promising area of further theoretical and empirical research.
