Leadership potential of students

The article substantiates the psychological characteristics of the cognitive, communicative and motivational sphere of the individual, which make up the psychological portrait of leaders needed by the modern united territorial communities of Ukraine. The purpose of the article is to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the leadership potential of contemporary student youth. In order to study the strengths and weaknesses of the leadership potential of contemporary student youth, a diagnostic study was conducted in April 2019. Its participants were students – representatives of student self-government institutions of higher education in Ukraine of agrarian profile, with a total number of 20 people. The study used a package of diagnostic techniques to study: 1) self-assessment of legal preparedness; knowledge of community resources for its development; knowledge of ways to activate the economy; ability to find people and work in a team, to manage a team, the ability to attract a team of followers; willingness to engage in self-education; strategic thinking; ability to see development prospects; 2) revealing the level of flexibility and originality of thinking; 3) diagnosis of the level of critical thinking; 4) study of openness to change, ease in learning new; 5) diagnosis of the ability to successfully solve complex problems in a critical situation; 6) diagnosis of desire for cooperation; 7) exploring the ability to negotiate, manage and resolve conflicts; 8) diagnostics of level of development of organizational abilities, ability to inspire and motivate others, level of development of communication skills and ability to communicate with people; 9) studying the expression of the need for cognition as basic in the pursuit of self-development and self-improvement, the development of their unique abilities; 10) identification of tendency to tact, diplomacy, ability to find the right tone of communication. The empirical study provided grounds for the conclusion that the student leaders have formed a considerable number of qualities necessary for leadership in the future life after completion of the university, and the feasibility of implementing measures for their purposeful formation. The prospect of further research in this area is to conduct empirical research on a larger sample and to develop a program of psychological leadership training for students, taking into account the results obtained.
