Abstract

Trichomoniasis is a disease caused by protozoan parasites that
live in the gastrointestinal tract or the genitourinary system. Often these protozoa
are non-pathogenic, but there are also highly pathogenic species.
Tritrichomonas foetus is a well-studied pathogen parasitizing the
reproductive system of cattle. Recently, it was found that the same pathogen is
able to parasitize in the intestines of cats - the subvascular or colon guts, causing
colonic diarrhea. High risks of development of this invasion are noted in animals
kept in nurseries, shelters for homeless animals. This article provides a brief
overview of the state of the studies of trichomoniasis in cats and the characteristics
of this parasite. The analysis of the results of studies of scientists on the detection
of trichomoniasis in cats and methods of research for the detection of a parasite in
feces of cats. Questions that are relevant for the prospects of development of this
issue in veterinary medicine are highlighted.
