This paper presents the results of an experiment on the comparative evaluation of different types of fillers for filters of biological treatment of recirculating aquaculture systems (abbreviated as RAS) at the stage of formation of the active bacterial pellicle. Highly porous ceramics and separax (porous glass) were used as fillers and promising biofiltration materials with significantly higher usable surface area values compared to conventional polymer floating biofillers. The velocity of biological filtration in RAS equipped with biofilters with different fillers was checked. Clarias gariepinus juvenile was selected as the biological test object. This species differs in increased resistance to the influence of nitrogen compounds on the body, but juveniles at the stage of cultivation from 0.5 to 200 g more sensitive to the factors of the hydrochemical state of water. At the same time, this species is less amenable to the spatial factor, compared to the traditional objects of aquaculture of Ukraine, which allows working with it in comparatively small model recirculating aquaculture systems. According to the research results, biofilters with different types of substrates for the settlement of nitrifying bacteria at the stage of start-up of RAS filtration systems undergo a cycle of establishing biological equilibrium at the same rate, and at the expense of more optimal hydrochemical parameters during the operation of RAS with investigated variants of biofilter fillers. The growth rates of Clarias gariepinus fry were slightly higher compared to the use of classic floating polymer filler. This is due to a higher specific surface area than the conventional polymeric filler. In order to verify the results of the experiment, especially regarding the effect of different biofilter fillers on water quality, biological equilibrium rate and biological purification in RAS and fish survival, it is advisable to continue the study, provided that the organic load level is increased in the experiment.References
