Abstract

A mathematical model has been developed and a numerical calculation of aerodynamics during the flow around vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) using a wind flow concentrator has been performed. Two modifications of the concentrator placement at different angles of the external wind flow are considered. When developing a mathematical model of turbulent flows, the Navier-Stokes equations were used and a modified k-ε turbulence model was selected. As a result of numerical calculations in 2D formulation of the unsteady aerodynamic problem, the distributions of speeds and pressures in the wind turbine-wind flow concentrator system were obtained. It was found that the quasi-stationary rotor rotation mode occurs approximately 1 s from the start of turbine operation. It is shown that the presence of a wind flow concentrator increases the local values of air speeds when flowing onto the wind turbine blades. The dependence of the rotor speed on time for two configurations of the concentrator placement relative to the direction of the external wind flow was obtained. As a result, it was shown that the use of a wind flow concentrator makes it possible to increase the efficiency and productivity of a wind turbine with vertical axis of rotation.
