Abstract

The study of linguocultural peculiarities of English sports reporting allows to understand the mentality of the nation, its values and stereotypes. The analysis of English sports coverage in the printed media proves that sport plays an important role in the life of Englishmen. It especially refers to football, which is traditionally considered to be an English game. It is evident that English character is revealed through the attitude of people towards the game, sporting events, football-players, coaches. Despite the fact that most scholars admit Englishmen to be rather reserved in expressing their emotions, our research allows us to state that they are quite emotional, expressive and open-minded in their commentaries of different sporting events. It proves the variety of linguistic means used in the analyzed articles. The research also confirms that Englishmen have an excellent sense of humour. They are noble, honest, hard-working, purposeful, sometimes even self-assured, devoted to their traditions and appreciate family values.

The linguostylistic analysis of the English sports coverage allows to state that their main linguistic function is to attract the reader’s attention and encourage him to read the suggested information. The realization of this function is carried out usually subconsciously through the usage of various phonetic, lexical and syntactic means which influence the addressee.

The results of the research prove that among the most frequently used linguistic means on the phonetic level are: alliteration and assonance; on the lexical level: emotional and evaluative lexicon, intensifying adverbs, adjectives in the superlative degree, colloquial words, terms, borrowings, proper names; on the syntactic level: elliptical sentences, direct and indirect speech, exclamatory sentences. As for the stylistic devices the most frequently used are the following: synonyms, epithets, metaphors, hyperbole, comparison, idioms, antithesis, repetitions, etc. All these means make sports reporting very informative, persuasive and emotional.
